Information Vigo - Redondela

Today, those who have followed the official route yesterday will find themselves a little tired after two tiring consecutive stages. Those who have followed the coastal route, much flatter, will have recovered better. However, both will have the opportunity to finish recovering on this short and simple stage.

Let's finish the Camino Portugues coastal route and let’s connect with the Central Camino Portugues!

We are on the last stage of the Camino Portugues coastal route. In Redondela, our destination today, the road along the coast converges with the layout of the Camino Portugues. It will be a great opportunity for those who began their journey before Oporto to meet old companions on the way.

During the day we will walk through the pleasant Camiño of the River Course, from where we enjoy excellent views of the Vigo Estuary.

Itinerary Vigo - Redondela

Today's stage does not entail any difficulty. It is a low distance route (16 km) and with hardly any unevenness.

Vigo (km. 0). Beginning of stage

Practical tips for this section: To get to the beginning of the route where the road begins to be well signposted, it is necessary to reach the corner of the Rúa Toledo with Rúa Urzáiz, in the neighbourhood of O Calvario. Now, we will explain in detail how to get there, but it is very easy. Buen Camino!

Vigo

From our accommodation, we head to Rúa Urzáiz, the main artery of the city. Once there, you have to follow it upwards, passing the Plaza de Fernando el Catolico. We cross Rua Pizarro and continue straight ahead, crossing Avenida Alcalde Gregorio Espino.

Without abandoning Rúa Urzáiz at any time, which will have been transformed into a pedestrian boulevard, we pass through the neighbourhood of O Calvario. After passing through the local market, we pass 3 streets and turn on the right-hand side by Rúa de Toledo, that is, the 4th Street that we will find on our path.

At this corner, Urzáiz with Toledo, begin the yellow arrows of the Camino de Santiago. Following them, we then cross an avenue and arrive next to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, known as the Church of the Peaks (km. 2.3).

Iglesia de los Picos (km. 2,3).

Practical tips for this section: In this section, we will begin to enjoy the views over the Ria de Vigo and the city.  Buen Camino!

Ría de Vigo

We pass the church on the right, ascending, by Rúa Toledo. We follow it to Rúa Cantabria, where we turn left.

We cross the Avenida del Aeropuerto, which corresponds to the N-556 road and we continue straight on, in ascent, passing by a civic centre and a blue-coloured building which is the city's water company (Aqualia). Without abandoning Rúa Cantabria at any time, we continue advancing 350 metres more, between small houses and some bars.

When we arrive under a power supply station, we begin to enjoy a good panoramic view of Vigo and its river. At this point, the street changes its name and is called Rúa da Pouleira, which ascends to a fountain with the same name (Km. 4).

Fonte da Pouleira (km. 2,3).

Practical tips for this section: The section of the Camiño das Augas is very quiet, without urban centres or services. Enjoy this peace because on arrival in Redondela it all will change and become much more hectic, given the confluence of roads.  Buen Camino!

Fonte da Pouleira

At the fountain, we find a line in the ground, with a wavy shape and painted in green and yellow, which we must follow, to the left, to the Miño do Poulo, asphalted but without sidewalks. Then, we continue along the way to the "Camiño das Augas", a fork of de Pedrosa. We go on this way, in a wooded section.

Between houses, we arrive at the Estrada da Madroa, a road, and we continue through the streets of Valerio, Subida da Traída and Camiño da Traída, always in the same direction. The asphalt ends and we continue along a stretch of land, which runs between the trees on the riverbank, with beautiful corners to explore.

Alternating stretches of land with some asphalt for a kilometre, we reach Rego Fondon, a small waterfall, where a stone table can be found. (km. 8.6).

Rego Fondón (km. 8,6).

Practical tips for this section: In this section, we reach the highest point of the stage, there we have a bar located in a stone chalet, where we can stop to enjoy the environment and seal the credential. Buen Camino!

We cross a road and ascend through the Fenteira, an asphalted pathway. 500 metres later we reach the highest point of the day, from where we can enjoy an excellent view of the Rande Straits and the entrance to the San Simón Cove.

Bahia San Simon

After 300 metres, the asphalt ends and we continue for 2.2 kilometres on a dirt track, in a beautiful stretch, sheltered by trees. We pass by the fountain of the Conde Mine.

400 metres later we return to the asphalt and we make a 180-degree turn, next to a large banana tree, leaving the Camiño das Augas and initiating a pronounced descent. We pass a couple of curves and arrive at a stone cross, next to a fountain. In front, stands the Church of San Andrés: we are in the parish of Cedeira.

We continue to the left, next to a small laundry and a school, walking the streets of the neighbourhood of Cruceiro. We turn to the right and take a steep descent to cross the train tracks.

After the railway, we find the N-550 road, on which we continue to the right for 300 metres, until a roundabout, from which we access to the centre of Redondela.

Redondela (km. 16). End of stage

Practical tips for this section: Congratulations, you have completed the Camino Portugues coastal route. Today or tomorrow you can continue advancing to Santiago de Compostela, following the route of the Camino Portugues (Central). See you tomorrow!

In Redondela, the Camino Portugues Coastal route and the Camino Portugues Central converge, sharing both routes until Santiago de Compostela. Redondela is a great location to finish the route today.

Here, those who started the route of the Camino Portugues (central) will have the opportunity to meet with those companions on the road, who separated their roads in Oporto.

In the locality, you can visit natural surroundings, like Mount Penide, the Alameda Park Gardens or even get close to San Simón Cove, on a long walk or by taking a taxi.

In Redondela you will also find religious interest, such as the Convent of Vilavella or the Church of Santiago. If you want to know more information about these places you can consult the section "What to see and do" on stage 24 of our guide on the Camino Portugues.

Those pilgrims who want to lengthen the stage can continue to Soutoxuste, at 4.6 kilometres, or to Arcade, at 6.7. In stage 25 of our guide on the Camino Portugues you will find information on the route. We stay in Redondela for the day.

Comments Vigo - Redondela

Here are some tips for you to complete this last stage of the Camino Portugues coastal route.

Precautions Vigo - Redondela

The greatest difficulty of the stage today is the departure from Vigo, which lacks signs at the corner of Rúa Toledo with Rúa Urzáiz. To get there it is as easy as locating Rúa Urzáiz, the main artery of the city, and then rising until it becomes a boulevard.

Following the Boulevard and after passing the Mercado do Calvario, the 4th Street is Rúa Toledo. On that corner the arrows begin.

Food Vigo - Redondela

Some of the typical dishes on today's route are clearly marked by the influence of the Vigo estuary.

  • Choco, A variant of squid from the San Simón Cove. You can find them prepared in their own ink, with rice, or even in empanadas (pies).
  • Fish: turbot, conger or hake.
  • Shellfish: crabs, mussels or scallops.

The Immaculate Conception Church is located in the neighbourhood of Calvario. Its construction was carried out in 1968 and is the work of the architect Antonio Román Conde.

The temple is built in concrete and stands out for its façade, which highlights the right angles that rise to the sky, which is why it is known as the Church of the Peaks.

Iglesia de los Picos

Iglesia de San Andrés

The Church of San Andrés is located in the Parish of Cedeira. The temple dates from 1743 and is the work of architect Fernando de Casas y Novoa, author of the Obradoiro façade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The church is baroque in style and keeps its structure almost unchanged. It has a Latin cross floor formed by a single nave, divided into two sections.
