After two short stages, those who started Camino Portugues in Tui begin to feel comfortable with the pilgrim’s routine. Those who left long before, began to see closer and closer a destiny that seemed very distant.
Let’s go on the Camino Portugues!
Today we have another short stage, less than 20 kilometres. The day will have a quite urban character, although we’ll cross really interesting sections, especially those on which the pilgrims path approaches the estuary.

Itinerary stage Redondela – Pontevedra
Today’s stage is 19.2 kilometres and has few slopes, only two climbs of 120 and 135 metres which are carried out in a progressive ascent, so they will not be a great difficulty for the pilgrim.
Redondela (Km. 0). Beginning of stage
Practical tips for this section: This section is a continuous stroll through an urban environment, so you can stop along it to have a peaceful breakfast. Buen Camino!
We start the stage today from the Rúa de Queimaliños, leaving to our right the Plaza da Alhondiga. We continue along the Rúas do Cruceiro, Lourerio and Da Picota. Shortly after we pass by the viaduct of Pontevedra. We descend to the N-550 road, we cross it next to the Chapel of Santa Marina (km. 0.7) and the Rúa del Campo del Futbol, parallel to the road.
We pass by the playing field and left round back by a wooden factory, entering in the parish of Cesantes.
On the first street, turn right onto Calle de Zancande (km. 1.7). At the next crossroads take a right, via Rúa Torre de Calle, with a nice ramp and a flyover over the railway.
Then we turn left for the beautiful, but brief, Camiño Real de Cesantes, which leads us to the Abreavella. We take the latter to the left and we reencounter the N-550 road.
Cesantes (N-550) (Km. 3,1)
Practical tips for this section: The Crossing with the national road is quite dangerous as there is a lot of traffic. You must be very cautious when crossing. Buen Camino!
After crossing the national, we go into Tuimil, the Parish of O Viso. Soon we find a detour to the left, followed by a slope that leads us to a stone fountain and a playground (km. 3.7). Behind this point, we find a dirt track, on which the slope becomes easier.
Surrounded by eucalyptus and pine trees we arrive at the first climb on today’s stage, next to the ruins of an old post house (km. 4.3). We advance 300 metres and stop to contemplate the panoramic view of one of the ends of the Vigo Estuary.
We descend and return to the national road, N-550. We cross it and continue along the hard shoulder of the road to Arcade, a parish in the county of Soutomaior.
Arcade (Km. 6,3)
Practical tips for this section: In this section, we will pass near the Church of Santiago and Soutomaior Castle but the pilgrim path does not pass exactly by them. It is advisable to deviate a little to visit them. Buen Camino!
The pilgrim path passes by a niche ornamented with motifs of the Camino de Santiago. By Fonte do Lavandeira we return to the road, cross it and continue along Rúa da Lameiriñas.
We cross Rúa Rosalía de Castro, with several bars and shops, and descend to Ponte Sampaio, a great stone ford that crosses the River Verdugo (km. 8). On the other side, we find the town.
Following the signs of the Camino de Santiago, we go through the streets. At a barn, turn right, passing by the Pazo de Bellavista. After a cross, we stray to the left. A few more turns and we leave Ponte Sampaio in ascent.
We arrive at Ponte Nova and, in ascent, we enter Brea Vella da Canicouva, on a road of large slabs that runs on the Roman road from the 19th century (km. 9.6).
Brea Vella da Canicouya (Km. 9,6)
Practical tips for this section: On this section, you will pass through various town centres, but not all of them have services. Buen Camino!
We continue to rise and before the end of the ascent, we reach an asphalted track and we follow it to the right. We make some turns, one of them at the 72.061 km marker to Santiago de Compostela, which allows us to leave the asphalt.
By a track between oaks and then on asphalt, we cross a set of dwellings of the place of Bergunde (km. 12.1), in the Parish of Figueirido. Following the pilgrim path, we pass by a fountain where you can read the inscription Montes de Figueirido.
Immediately, we pass the places of Boullosa and Alcouce. In descent, we come across the EP-0002 road, which crosses the Parish of Santa Comba de Bértola (km. 13.1). By a stretch surrounded by oaks, chestnuts and eucalyptus, we return to the road. We cross it and take a dirt track, next to some cornfields, until the Chapel of Santa Marta (km. 14.7).
Capilla de Santa Marta (Km. 14,7)
Practical tips for this section: Since the last part of this stage is quite hard because it runs completely on asphalt, the itinerary described in this section corresponds to the alternative route (recently declared as official) that runs to the side of the River Tomeza. Buen Camino!
The pilgrim path continues to the place of O Pobo and continues placidly along the banks of the River Tomeza, returning to the road to enter the parish of the same name. Along the roadside of the road we cross Casal do Río, Lusquiños (km. 16.2) and O Marco.
In O Marco, after a roundabout, along Calle Ramón Otera and pass under the railway. Continuing straight ahead, we find a roundabout and continue along Calle Gorgullón.
Later we cross Calle Eduardo Pondal, to continue along Calle Virxe do Miño. At the end, turn left and then right, to enter the old town of Pontevedra.
Pontevedra (Km. 19,2). End of stage
Practical tips for this section: Pontevedra has enough historical and cultural heritage if you cannot contain the desire to get to Santiago de Compostela, it’s an ideal city to spend more than one night and devote a whole day to. See you tomorrow!
Some pilgrims let themselves be dragged by the desire to reach the destiny that we all pursue, the tomb of Santiago the Apostle, and lengthen this stage. The most reasonable thing is to finish it in Pontevedra because the city has great historical heritage and it would be a pity not to visit it.
Pontevedra’s old town deserves a leisurely visit, both for its patrimony and for its wide gastronomic offerings. Among the essential visits in the city is the peculiar Sanctuary of the Pilgrim.
However, the city has many other temples, such as the Chapels of San Roque and the Nazarene, the ruins of the Church of San Domingos, the Churches of San Bartolomé and San Francisco, the Convent of Santa Clara and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The city also hides many places to walk or to stop to feel the rhythm of the city. Some of them are: Plaza del Teucro, Peirao, San José, Menéndez Núñez and the mansion located in it, Plaza de las Cinco Calles, Verdura, Peregrino, da Pedreira and Pazo Mugartegui and Plaza de Curros Enríquez.
Walking along its streets you can visit various examples of civil architecture from different eras, as well as several museums, markets and theatres.

Precautions stage Redondela – Pontevedra
We are faced with an easy stage, with a short and well-signposted tour. The terrain on the route of the Camino Portugues is also not very complicated, during the day, we face two climbs but with a level of fewer than 200 metres.
Only cyclists will find some difficulties in the ascent to Brea Vella, since the roadway alternates stretches of stones and gravel.
Along the stage, the road crosses our path on several occasions. You have to pay attention to all of them, but especially with the one that is located before Arcade.
Gastronomy stage Redondela – Pontevedra
Crossing Galicia and not enjoying its gastronomy is almost a crime, so we do not get tired of suggesting exquisite Galician dishes.
- Ostras de Arcade. These molluscs are farmed on the rafts in the mouth of the River Verdugo and are very famous in Galicia.

What to do stage Redondela – Pontevedra
Throughout this stage, you will pass through numerous parishes with high historical and cultural value. Today’s short route allows you to stop for sightseeing, as well as deviate from the route to visit nearby places.
Now, we talk about each of these places and other points of interest you will find in the city of Pontevedra.
Puerto de Arcade
The Soutomaior Marina is located in the Parish of Arcade; hence it is also known as the Port of Arcade. It is a recently-built pier used by both artisan fishermen and sports boats.
The port is surrounded by a breakwater that protects it from possible currents and does not have great depth. For this reason, the boats must accede to it during the high tide, since at low tide, navigation towards San Simón Cove and the Vigo Estuary becomes complicated.
Puentes del Verdugo y el Oitavén
The Verdugo and Oitavén rivers make up the basin of the Vigo Estuary. Both have narrow valleys and abundant vegetation.
The Verdugo Bridge was built by the Romans and consists of three half-point arches. The Oitavén Suspension Bridge is located at the union of both rivers.
Puente de Ponte Sampaio
The Ponte Sampaio Bridge is an old Roman viaduct, however, there are no remains of this construction and what can be seen today is a structure from the Middle Ages. In the1809, the Battle of Ponte Sampaio against the French troops was fought on this bridge.
Castillo de Soutomaior
Soutomaior Castle is located a few kilometres from the Camino Portugues, located in an elevated area of the town, in order to monitor and protect its inhabitants. The construction dates from the 12th century and is attributed to Pedro Madruga.
The castle was destroyed during the “Irmandiña” Revolution and had to be rebuilt. The repair was done by the same architect.
In The 19th century, the property passed into the hands of the Marquis de la Vega de Armijo and the castle had another important remodelling. Fruit of this is the Ladies’ Gallery, a neo-Gothic style construction.
In 1982 the construction was passed on to the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, completing yet another important remodelling of the castle. During the work, the wooden coffered ceilings were rebuilt and the fortress cover was replaced by a metal structure, giving a greater volume to the building.
The Ladies Gallery was also renovated and a viewpoint added, located in the arms yard.
To access the complex, you have to cross a bridge. On this, one can appreciate the shield of the Marquis of Mos and opposite the very tall Tower of Homage.
The exterior wall is an irregular oval construction, which allows it to adapt to the rocky terrain of the land.
On the outskirts of the walled enclosure, you can visit the beautiful Castle Gardens. In the vicinity of the castle, a little higher, you will find the Chapel of San Caetano.

Jardines del Castillo
The Castle Gardens has been catalogued as a Garden of International Excellence, given the great variety of tree species that it houses: ancient ferns, marsh cypress, Black acacias, rosebushes, camellias, fruit trees, vineyards, etc.
This botanical park has many decorative elements such as the Estuary Pond, the Fountain of the Marquise, with various sculptures of sailors and some granaries.

Opening Hours: Open every day. In Summer (from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00) and in winter (from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00).
Admission: Free.
Iglesia de Santiago
The Church of Santiago is located in the Parish of Arcade. The construction was carried out in the 12th century and has a Romanesque style, although, from this period, only the western façade, the rectangular apse and some elements of its interior are conserved.
A small baptismal chapel is located next to the temple, decorated with the Baptism of Jesus. It also highlights the construction of the two-body belfry, locating the two bells in a single frame. The second is topped by a pinnacle with a cross.

Iglesia de San Salvador
The Church of San Salvador de Soutomaior dates from the 18th century and is Baroque in style. The construction is made of masonry and stands out for the geometric decoration of its cover, where there is also representation in relief of the Virgin with Child.
The access door is flanked by columns with capitals that look like decoration with vegetal elements. On one side is a tower topped by a dome, where the bell is located.
Inside the temple, you can contemplate a large altarpiece and various carvings.
Capilla del Castro de la Peneda
The Castro de la Peneda Chapel, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The temple was declared as a Historical Asset because in the old days, a Celtic Castro was located under it.
Of the construction, the large portico with a half-point arch stands out, and a tower attached to the right side, where the bell is located.
Pontevedra
Pontevedra is the second most important urban centre in Galicia, after Santiago de Compostela. The city has almost 83,000 inhabitants.
The city is considered the capital of the Rías Baixas because despite not being a large city, Pontevedra has been awarded on several occasions for being one of the best cities to live in, for its cultural richness, the standard of living and mobility conditions.
Its historic quarter is full of charming corners and evocative cobbled streets. One of the points that most interest arouses among the pilgrims is the curious Church of the Pilgrim.
However, the city houses numerous other temples, such as the Chapels of San Roque and the Nazarene, the ruins of the Church of San Domingos, the Churches of San Bartolomé and San Francisco, the Convent of Santa Clara and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Another of the elements that endow the city with attractiveness is the high presence of charming squares: Plaza del Teucro, Peirao, San José, Menéndez Núñez and the mansion located in it, Plaza de Los Cinco Calles, Verdura, the Pilgrim, Da Pedreira and Pazo Mugartegui and Curros Enríquez.
Walking along its streets, you can visit various examples of civil architecture from different eras, as well as various museums, markets and theatres. It is also highly recommended to visit Cobo Island, for the originality of its space.
Teatro Principal
The Main Theatre of Pontevedra is located in the heart of the city, where in the past the Church of San Bartolomé was located, which had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1980. Both the theatre and the Liceo Casino host a rich and varied cultural offer annually, with theatrical performances, temporary exhibitions, film projections, etc.
Next to the theatre, you can visit other attractive buildings such as the 15th-century Casa de las Campanas, located in Calle Don Filiberto.
Santuario de la Peregrina
The Sanctuary of the Pilgrim is one of the most famous temples in the city of Pontevedra. The temple was built in 1778 and was declared an Artistic Historical Monument in 1982.
The temple, erected in honour of the Pilgrim’s Virgin, who is in charge of guiding pilgrims from Baiona to Santiago de Compostela, is of late Baroque style, although it presents neoclassical forms.
The main Altarpiece presents a silver-shaped scallop, restored in 2008, which symbolizes the union of the temple with the Camino de Santiago.
Capilla de San Roque
The Chapel of San Roque in Pontevedra was erected to safeguard a city from plagues and epidemics that arrived aboard the boats. For this reason, its original construction was carried out in the vicinity of the port.
However, its location was changed on several occasions, until in 1861, it was located in A Moureira. Today, the temple still retains several elements of its original structure.
Ruinas de la Iglesia de San Domingos
The Church of San Domingos dates from the 14th century and in 1895, was declared An Artistic Historical Monument. At present, the temple only retains the chancel and façade of the capital chapel.
The interior of the church houses a set of tombstones with various coats of arms and graves from the Middle Ages. In the graves are the remains of historical figures such as Sueiro Gómez de Soutomaior, Tristan de Montenegro and Pedro Álvarez de Sotomaior, a Galician aristocrat, known as Pedro Madruga.
Puente del Burgo
The Burgo Bridge is part of the route of the Camino Portugues. It is a Romanesque construction, made with the aim of maintaining the course of the River Lérez on the Via XIX. The bridge worked until the middle of the 12th century, although in such a bad state that a new one was built next to it.
Plaza del Teucro
The Teucro Square in Pontevedra owes its name to a legend that tells that the Greek archer Teucro, after the Trojan War, moved to the west in order to found Pontevedra. The space is surrounded by patrician houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Plaza del Peirao
Plaza del Peirao in Pontevedra is located on the site where the old Peiraos (piers) of the city were located. Of the space, the round fountain stands out, from the 18th century, topped with a peculiar statue.
In The Plaza, you can also visit the remains of the house where Paio Gómez Chariño resided and an old farmhouse that currently houses the headquarters of the Professional College of Technical Architects.
Plaza de San José
The Plaza de San José in Pontevedra is home to a monument in honour of the gatherings of five noble intellectuals of the 20th century, linked to the city. Around the square are located two of the most important cultural centres of Pontevedra: Café Moderno and the Abanca Socio-Cultural Centre.
Plaza Menéndez Núñez y Caserón
Plaza Menéndez Núñez in Pontevedra is known traditionally as the Hens Square, due to the bird market that was held on it, in front of the huge house of the Cruz and Montenegro family.
The Mansion dates from the 15th century and was the main house of the Contra-Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez, who died in 1869, shortly after the end of the Battle of El Callao, Peru.
At the end of the 19th century, the building welcomed the famous Muruais Library and was used as a space for gatherings between great thinkers and writers of the time, as Valle Inclán. In fact, a statue can now be seen in the square in homage to the famous author of the Sonatas.
Plaza de las cinco calles
Square of the Five Streets is located in the city of Pontevedra. This square is known for hosting the house in which the writer Valle Inclán resided. Next to the house, you can see a cross from the late 18th century, placed in the square after the end of the Civil War.
Nowadays, the space constitutes an authentic gastronomic and festive centre in the city, since in it the main streets of leisure and restaurants converge.
Plaza de la Verdura
Plaza de la Verdura in Pontevedra owes its name to the vegetable markets that were celebrated in the past and which are still being carried out. Among the buildings surrounding the square, the 19TH-century light factory stands out, which made Pontevedra one of the first cities to have the service.
Plaza de la Peregrina
The Pilgrim’s Square was built in the late 18th century, following the construction of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Pilgrim. Its location, in the middle of the Roman road, was chosen as the route that the pilgrims followed on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
The Square has been remodeled on several occasions over the years. The last one dates back to the 1950s. Today, the square is one of the nerve centres of Pontevedra.
Plaza de la Ferrería
The Plaza de la Ferreria is one of the most popular squares in Pontevedra. Its name comes from the forgings that, in the past, was available in its arcades.
One of the most outstanding elements of the space is the Ferreria Fountain, which dates from the 16th century, although it was refurbished in 1930.
Another element that draws attention to the square is the Casa de las Caras, or also known as the House of the Barbeitos. It Is a Renaissance-style house that has various face-shaped sculptures on the south façade.
In the square, the Church of San Francisco and the Tax Office are found, a building built in the year 1800, whose front door corresponds to the old door of Santo Domingo, the medieval wall.
Pazo Provincial
The Provincial Manor of Pontevedra is an eclectic-style building from the late 19th century. The construction is the work of Alejandro Rodríguez Sesmeros. Recently, it has been rehabilitated in order to accommodate the Provincial Council.
Pazo da Cultura
The Pazo da Cultura is located in the city of Pontevedra. The construction of the building was carried out in 1997, by Manuel Casas, with the aim of constituting a set of buildings projected on a landscape scale.
The building has a congress area, a modern auditorium and an exhibition hall, where plays, concerts, etc. are performed. Annexed is a fairground of almost 5,000 square metres that hosts annually all kinds of fairs, cultural events and commercial fairs.
Museo de Pontevedra
Pontevedra Museum is considered one of the best in Spain for its peculiar distribution and the high value of its collections.
The museum space is distributed in six historical buildings of the city: the Ruins of San Domingos, the Fernández López building, the buildings of Castro Monteagudo and García Flórez, the Sarmiento building and a new building known as the Sixth building. The latter was inaugurated in 1927, by the Provincial Council.
Of the previous spaces, the most architectural valuable are the houses of Castro Monteagudo and García Flórez, in Baroque style, and the Sarmiento building declared an Artistic Historical Monument in 1962.
Of the latter, it also deserves to be emphasized the importance and diversity of its collection, in which pieces and documents are exposed from pre-history to the present day.
In the museum, you can also visit collections of Galician archaeology, traditional Galician ceramics and Sargadelos, as well as spaces dedicated to maritime history, which includes the legacy of great sailors and sailors of the city.
The museum group has three rooms dedicated to the Counter-Admiral of Pontevedra, Casto Méndez Núñez, in which one can admire a reproduction of the Numancia frigate on which he travelled.
Mercado de Abastos
The Food Market is located in the vicinity of the River Lérez. The building was built more than half a century ago and was restored in 2003, thanks to César Portela. During this restoration, part of the Roman wall was discovered.
The building stands out for its historical value and a wide range of food products. On the ground floor are fish, meat and flowers; On the first floor, vegetables, fruits and cheeses.
Capilla Nazareno
The Nazareno Chapel is located on Calle Tetuan in Pontevedra. The temple was built in The Middle Ages and is baroque in style.
The popularity of the chapel is due to a peculiar pilgrimage that takes place at the end of March, in which the faithful flock to the temple to ask the Holy Nazarene the famous Three Thanks (desires), forming long lines from early in the morning.
Jardines de Castro Sampedro
The Castro Sampedro Gardens are located in front of the Convent of San Francisco de Pontevedra. The natural collection has gardens of roses and camellias, as well as a magnificent fountain from the 16th century, The work of Domingos Fernández and Joao López.
Illa do Cobo
The Illa do Cobo in Pontevedra is also known as the Island of Sculptures. This pioneering area in Spain brings together an extraordinary cultural, agrarian and environmental heritage.
In the creation of this magnificent environment, twelve artists were invited to create sculptures related to the landscape, the tradition of the place and the essence of man and his connection with nature.
Currently, on the island, you can see works by artists such as Enrique Velasco, Anne & Patrick Poirier, Ulrich Rückriem, Robert Morris, Richard Long, Francisco Leiro, José Pedro Croft, Dan Graham, Fernando Casás or Giovanni Anselmo.
Iglesia de San Bartolomé
The Church of San Bartolomé is located in the city of Pontevedra. Its construction was carried out between 1696 and 1714 and is of Baroque style.
It Is a Jesuit temple that houses in its interior a magnificent set of altarpieces and carvings made by various artists, for example, Pedro de Campo, Gregorio Fernandez, Bieito Silveira or Pedro de Mena. The collection highlights the image of the Virgen de la O, patron of the city, and the representation of the Magdalena.

Iglesia de San Francisco
The Church of San Francisco is located in the city of Pontevedra. The Temple dates from the 14th century and was declared an Artistic Historical Monument in 1896.
The Church belongs to the Franciscan Order and stands out mainly for its interior, where you can visit the figure of the 19th century Nazareno, various mural paintings and the tomb of Paio Gómez Chariño, illustrious poet and admiral.

Convento de Santa Clara
The Convent of Santa Clara is located in Pontevedra. At present, only the church is preserved. The temple dates from the second half of the 14th century and is Gothic in style. Inside, it houses a huge set of Baroque altarpieces.

Casa del Barón de Casa Goda
The House of the Baron de Casa Goda is located in the very heart of the city of Pontevedra, in the old dwelling of the Counts of Maceda. The building is in a Renaissance style and has a large façade in neoclassic style, from the 16th century. Nowadays, it welcomes the Parador de Turismo in its interior.
Basílica de Santa María la Mayor
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is located in the city of Pontevedra and, in 1931, was declared an Artistic Historical Monument.
The temple combines the late Gothic style with the Renaissance and features a 16th-century Plateresque-style façade. This façade is considered one of the most important plateresque works in Galicia. There is a peculiar image of San Xerome with glasses.
In the interior of the basilica, the image of the Christ of the Sailors is highlighted, from the 18th century, the Christ of Freedom, from the 16th century, and the magnificent vaults of the crosses.

Alameda Palmeras Vicenti is a beautiful space located in the historical part of the city of Pontevedra composed of three zones: the Paseo de las Palmeiras, with various exotic species, the Garden of Eudardo Vicenti and the Alameda.
Plaza da Pedreira y Pazo de Mugartegui
The Plaza da Pedreira in Pontevedra was formerly known as the Grass Square. Its present name was derived from the stone works carried out by the city’s stonemasons.
In this space stands the Pazo de Mugartegui, a building of Galician Baroque style, from the 17th century. However, it has recently been restored to the interior to accommodate the Regulating Council of the Appellation of Origin of Rías Baixas Wines.
Plaza de Curros Enríquez
The Plaza de Curros Enríquez, in Pontevedra, pays homage to the famous writer from Orense. The space has a monument to Alexandre Boveda, founder, together with Castelao, of the Galician Party in the city, and with a magnificent iron fountain, from the 19th century.
