El Hierro Island is the smallest of the Canary Islands and also the one located furthest west. On your hiking route on this island, a real natural jewel of the Atlantic, you will enjoy the dreamy scenery.

At present, more than half of the entire territory of the island is protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in order to preserve its cultural and natural diversity.

Its shores are bordered by columns of basalt and all its subtropical interior is full of volcanic lava flows. You will have multiple landscapes and options to delight you with their nature.

You will also pass by picturesque villages, juniper forests and semi-arid landscapes, as they abound in all of the Canary Islands.

As a curious fact, you should know that from El Hierro, which is still the least visited island in the Canary Islands, Columbus sailed towards his discovery. Until then, this island was considered ‘ The End of the World ‘.

Hiking Itinerary in El Hierro

1

Arrival in El Hierro

Arrival at El Hierro Airport. As soon as you arrive, you will be transferred to the Parador in Bahia de la Playas, where you will stay for two nights, enjoying breath-taking views of the island's volcanic mountain and, of course, the sea. If you arrive early, we suggest you take a walk in the gardens and common areas of the hotel or, well, enjoy a swim in the pool to start your trip in the best way.

2

Circular route in Valverde

Breakfast included.

Your day will begin in Valverde, the capital of El Hierro, the only capital city of all the Canary Islands that is not on the coast, but at 600 metres above sea level. The route will be made through forests and meadows, getting to know also many sections of red clay that will impress you.

You will reach the sacred tree of Garoé, very characteristic on the island, so do not hesitate to take a photo that you will take to remember. At the end of your walk today, a taxi will take you back to the Parador that you will be staying in.

3

From Mirador de la Peña to Tigaday

Breakfast included.

Today you will be taken by taxi to Mirador de la Peña, from where you start your route for the day. From there, you could enjoy spectacular views of the Bay of El Golfo and its characteristic green colour. Throughout your journey through the Nisdafe Plateau, you will see immense volcanic cones and all the beauty of the sea in front of you.

Of course, El Golfo will always be present as you advance. To return to Tigaday, you must descend through mossy laurel forests typical of subtropical weather.

4

Circular route to the natural pools of La Maceta

Breakfast included.

On your route today you can see multiple banana plantations, pineapples and many other typical fruits of the area. This, coupled with the medium-low difficulty hike you will face on this day, will help you spend an ideal day. The Eco-Museum of Guinea is a must see in El Golfo Valley, where you will be able to know in detail the history of the island.

If you have time, do not hesitate to do it. Then, from the Hotel Punta Grande, you can walk along the coastline of Las Puntas until you reach the natural pools of La Maceta. Once you have taken a dip and have rested from your route today, you will return to the accommodation, where we suggest to enjoy the terrace to observe the landscape that you will be surrounded by.

5

From El Morcillo a Tigaday

Breakfast included.

Today you will be taken by taxi to El Morcillo, in the centre of a forest of aromatic pines that you will love. You will have multiple and spectacular views along your hike, while you walk along a route that formerly connected the cities on both sides of the island.

Then, you will go into the well-known forest formation of the rainforest in the Canary Islands called Fayal-Brezal. So, as you walk along the island, you will enjoy breath-taking views of volcanic lava flows that fall to the south coast of El Hierro, while you return to Tigaday.

6

From the Chapel de La Virgen de Los Reyes to Pozo de La Salud

Breakfast included.

Today you will be transferred to the Chapel of La Virgen, which in turn is the Chapel of the Santo de la Isla, and from there you can start your route today through extensive livestock pasture. Then, you will see some species of junipers that are endemic and thus protected, which take very peculiar forms thanks to the trade winds.

When you get to the Mirador de Bascos, do not hesitate to stop for a moment to look out over the Gulf and admire its beauty, and then continue the path that will end up descending through the Monteverde Forest to Sabinosa, a very picturesque town in which you will end your journey.

7

Circular Volcanic route or optional guided visit 'Ruta del Meridiano'

Breakfast included.

For your day today, you will have two options: a self-guided walk or a guided tour. The first one is an easy walk to explore the white sand beach, uniquely formed by pieces of shells. Then you will continue along a path that runs between volcanic lava flows while you enjoy the coast beside you, observing its cliffs formed by the sea.

The second option is a guided tour of about 3 to 4 hours by the "Meridian Route" so called because the Island of El Hierro is also known as the Island of the Meridian. You'll walk through the West lava fields, the Orchilla Lighthouse and the site formerly known as the 'Prime Meridian'.

The latter acquired this denomination given that El Hierro, being the island more to the west of the Canary Islands, was formerly the most westerly point of the 'known world until then', that is to say when the other part of the planet had not yet been discovered. If you take option number two, your transfers and picnic lunch are included in the price of €80 (approximately) you will have to pay once you are there.

8

Return from El Hierro

Breakfast included.

Today you will be taken to El Hierro Airport to take the flight back to your destination. *

*Remember that when you book your circuit you can ask us to reserve additional nights of hotel for the days after the end of your circuit to lengthen your stay in El Hierro on your own.
