Hiking Itinerary in La Gomera
In case you did not know, we want to inform you that in the Canary Islands, they have multiple alternatives for hiking. Of course, one of the tropical and that will surprise you, will be La Gomera.
Arrival in La Gomera
Arrival at Tenerife Airport. As soon as you arrive, you will have to take a bus or a taxi to the Christians and from there you can go by Ferry (not included) to La Gomera. It takes about 40 minutes to arrive and, once there, transport will be waiting to take you to the accommodation in La Gomera for your first night at the Parador de San Sebastián. When you check in at your hotel, we suggest you take your first walk in San Sebastián and start enjoying the rhythm and the island flavour that will accompany you for a week.
Evening meal included.
From El Cedro to Chipude and to the Garajonay National Park
Today they will take you on transport to the starting point of your route. You will start in the Garajonay National Park, which is the green lung of La Gomera. From there, you will go into the tropical Laurel environment that characterizes the whole of the north of the island. Next, you will continue walking in forests of mosses, ferns, lichens and laurel trees.
When you are at the top of the mountain, you will be able to see the whole island of La Gomera and, in addition, the neighbouring islands of La Palma, El Hierro and, of course, the volcanic peak of El Teide in Tenerife. Finally, you will go down to Chipude, a town in the upper area of Vallehermoso and on the periphery of the Garajonay Park, characterized by its crop terraces.
From Chipude to Vallehermoso
Today you will walk through the most outstanding ravines on the island and you'll see multiple valleys that will make you understand the reason why La Gomera has multiple hidden corners and that is a mystery when you have limited access.
Then you will pass by El Cercado, a traditional architecture farmhouse with stone façades and tiles on the roofs, that you will have to cross to reach the most characteristic valley of the island: the Barranco de Valle Gran Rey, full of cultivation terraces and palm trees. Then, when you pass through Las Hayas, you should stop at a traditional restaurant in the area and that will allow you to enjoy the local gastronomy of La Gomera.
Finally, to reach your accommodation in Vallehermoso, you must descend by laurels, junipers and palm groves towards the Valle de Los Loros and, then, you will have finished today's route.
Circular route from Vallehermoso
Today you will discover a slightly more arid landscape, while little by little you make an ascent towards the Chapel of Santa Clara, from where you will be delighted with remarkable views from the top of the mountain towards the sea.
Afterwards, you will continue on a climbing path that will guide you to a cove on the Island coast, where you will feel really disconnected from reality and you will be able to rest with the sound of the waves in the background before returning to Vallehermoso.
From Vallehermoso to Hermigua
Today you will have a very good walking day, starting with the valley and then an ascent with some difficulty towards the Monumento Natural Roque Cano, a prominent motif on the municipal shield for being part of the history of the municipality of Vallehermoso.
Then you will go to the Amalahuigue Reservoir, a breakwater dam located in the Sobreagulo and Las Rosas area. Finally, you will have one further ascent, but this one of much less difficulty, that will take you towards the visitor centre of the Garajonay National Park.
Then you will head towards the Barranco de la Vica and go up to the dam. At the end of this hike, you must descend again until you reach Hermigua.
Circular route from Hermigua
Today you will face a circular route that will take you through the farms that stand out for their crop terraces and the surroundings with very little vegetation. Then you will walk through multiple ravines to reach the Bay of Caleta de Hermigua, whose bathing conditions on the beach are exceptional thanks to its calm waters and its black sand.
There is also another route option that will be a little longer and will take you over the coast, allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of the neighbouring island, Tenerife, as well as the peak of El Teide.
From Las Casetas to San Sebastián
Breakfast included. Today you have to choose between two types of routes, both with spectacular vegetation and landscape. The difference is in the distance you will travel in each of them on your return to San Sebastián.
For anyone who chooses, yes, you must first make a transfer. The first and the most extensive will take you to the lookout at La Degollada de Peraza and then beautiful scenery along the southeastern coast of the islands.
Some of the sections have higher terrain, but all their roads are very well signposted and cared for. In the end, you can go to a beach where you can have a dip in the sea. The second and shortest is the starting point at Las Casetas.
You will start with a very short ascent and then walk quite inclined, downhill, while you have all the sea and the views of the peak of El Teide ahead of you. We suggest that if you are afraid of heights, do not choose this option.
Return from La Gomera
Today you will have to go to the port of La Gomera to take a ferry towards Tenerife (not included) and then your flight back to your home city.*
*Remember that when you book your circuit you can ask us to reserve additional hotel nights for the days after the end of your circuit to extend your stay in La Gomera or Tenerife on your own.
