Hiking Itinerary in Tenerife
Arrival at Tenerife South
Arrival at Tenerife South Airport. As soon as you arrive, a taxi will be waiting to take you to your accommodation in Vilaflor, a beautiful little village surrounded by pine trees where you will spend your first night.
If you have time before sleeping, we suggest you go through its stone streets and start to taste the typical Canarian wines, as well as enjoy the first contact with the people of the island.
Circular route through the "Lunar Landscape"
Today you'll walk through the well-known Lunar Landscape in Tenerife, located in the Parque de la Corona Forestal, the largest protected landscape on the island. This route is of ancestral origin and by it have already travelled Canarian ancestors, known as Guanches, accompanied by their cattle and flocks.
You will start in the municipality of Vilaflor de Chasna and return to the same town at the end as this is a circular route. You will travel along trails full of pines and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, such as Guajara.
The most impressive of today's path will be the countless volcanic rocks you will see as you walk and whose shapes have been moulded over time, thanks to rain and wind, thus becoming structures very similar to those of the moon, which is why It receives the name of Lunar Landscape.
From Parador de Las Cañadas to El Teide National Park
Today you will travel a longer stretch that needs a little more effort and has some pronounced ascents. Yes, we assure you that the view of the Sombrero de Chanas will compensate for everything, in addition to the impressive view of Mount Teide and the crater of Las Cañadas. So don't worry, all your effort will be worth it.
You will later pass along a solidified lava path where you'll see immense rocks produced by volcanic explosions, as well as multiple tropical plants.
Finally, you will return to your accommodation today, from where you started the route: the Parador de las Cañadas, just at the beginning of Mount Teide.
Choice of a walk from the Parador de Las Cañadas
For today's route, you have three options to choose from. The first one will be to climb the Guajara Mountain, which is 2715 metres high. Once you reach the top, you will be able to enjoy observing the Teide volcano, La Caldera and, if it were not enough, the nearest islands: Gran Canaria and La Gomera. If you dare, you'll feel almost as if you've gone up to heaven.
You also have the option of climbing Mount Teide. You can do it in two ways. One, walking for an hour to the base of the cable car and, there, take it up to 3718 metres of altitude for which the famous volcano is famous.
Another, to make a circular route taking the cable car to the top and then walking downhill to the Altavista Refuge.
Finally, the third option and more comfortable, will be to take a walk in the so-called Roques Garcia, a set of very particular rock formations, also known as one of the best scenarios to walk inside the Teide National Park. The most popular of them are the 'Roque Chincha', 'La Catedral' and 'La Cascada'.
From Santiago del Teide to Garachico
Today you will take a short transfer to Santiago del Teide in the west of the island, from where you'll travel to the Cumbre de Bolico, which divides meteorologically the north and south of Tenerife, and then arrive at the village of Masca, in the very centre of the Teno mountains.
Masca is known as one of the most beautiful villages in Tenerife, known for its stone houses and the walls of ravines, where you will finish your route today.
We suggest you have a good coffee or a good refreshing drink, while you revel in the views you will have from there. Then you will move to Garachico, located north of Tenerife.
Circular route in San Juan del Reparo
Today you can rest a little thanks to the comfortable walk you will face to the town San Juan del Reparo. From there, you will see the colourful houses in Garachico, as well as the entire coast of the island. You will also see lava flows corresponding to the Black Mountain volcano, which more than 300 years ago destroyed the municipality of Garachico.
When you finish your route, we suggest you take a swim in the nearby natural pools or go for a walk in the city to learn more about Canarian life and enjoy its gastronomy rich in fresh fish.
Circular route in El Palmar
Today you will take a transfer that, in 20 minutes, will take you to El Palmar, a village characterized by its workers dedicated to agriculture and the production of maize meal. From there, you will start your route through the El Palmar Valley towards the forest of Monte del Agua and then arrive in the city of Teno Alto.
If you are fond of good food and especially the traditional food of the places you visit, enjoy the local goat's cheese. You won't be able to forget its exquisite taste.
Finally, you will continue walking through the Cumbre of Baracán, the name coming from the ancient Guanches, until you arrive again at El Palmar, where today's hike ends.
