Arrival in Porto
To start your hiking trail, you will have the first day to complete a self-guided tour around the entire city of Porto. We recommend you to know the old town, its cathedral, its squares and, of course, some of its typical restaurants on the banks of the Douro River where the views will delight you.
Hiking in Porto and arrival in Pinhão
Before leaving Porto, we suggest that you take a walk through its historic centre, enjoy a Belém pastry, visit the Lello Bookshop, then cross the Don Luis I Bridge and, of course, get to know the Porto-Sao Bento train station characterized by its tiled decoration.
Then you will take a train on your own to the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where for just over two hours you will have panoramic views of vineyards and charming Portuguese landscapes.
Once you arrive in Pinhao, you will need to take a transfer to reach the second accommodation point on your hiking trail.
Length: Free Walk
From Pinhão to Sabrosa
For your third day on this trip, you will walk towards Sabrosa, where you will enjoy the best views and, if you want to, the best wine from the Upper Douro. Wine production there has been part of its daily life for thousands of years.
As a curious fact, we would tell you that this was the first area of the world declared as a wine region and its traditions are preserved, because the grapes are still crushed in a traditional way.
As you walk, you will get to know a great diversity of villages and wineries that will confirm the reason why Portuguese wine is so famous.
Length: 13 km
From Sabrosa to Alijó
For today, your walk will surprise you with the ancient customs and traditions in some of the villages that you will cross. Some, where the wood oven is still the most used, is an example of this.
At the beginning of this fourth day, you will cross the first vineyards on your hike before arriving at the River Pinhao. You will then pass through a village called Favaios, where we suggest you stop to experience one of the vineyards with the greatest international recognition: Quinta do Portal.
Your destination for today will be Alijó, in the heart of the Upper Douro region.
Length: 13 km
From Alijó to Vale Mendiz
As we had told you previously, your days will all be marked by some vineyards. Today, we recommend to you that you include in your walk a stop to taste the Quinta da Avessada wine, whose fame surpasses 100 years and where you can also enjoy an interactive museum to deepen your knowledge of the world of wines.
Once you follow your route to Vale Mendiz, you can continue to enjoy vineyards and small towns that cross your path together with the steep slopes that you cross and that seem to be part of the river because of its proximity.
Length: 16,5 km
Overnight: Vale Mendiz
From Vale Mendiz to Pinhão
Today, the Douro River will take over your day. The breath-taking views you'll have as you walk to Pinhao will make all the effort of these walking days worthwhile. There will also be vineyards and mountains along the way, which seem to be framed landscapes; one more reason to understand why the Douro Valley has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Length: 8 km
Cruise across the Douro River to Porto
Welcome to your last day of this trip through northern Portugal. Today, we will transfer you to Regua, from where you will take the cruise that will take you all day towards Porto. There, you will enjoy lunch and good wine that are included as part of the experience.
While travelling, hundreds of vineyards and plantations will surround you as you sail. Some of the hamlets are so small and old that they look like ancient cities, as, in some of them, you can see just their church and a castle.
Once in Porto, remember to visit what you weren't able to visit on your first day. And, of course, say goodbye to Portugal with a good dinner on the banks of the Douro River.
Length: Free Walk
Return from Porto
Today you will have a transfer included to Porto Airport, from where you will take your flight back to your home city.*
