You will be able to travel through the interior of the whole island and delight in the native flora and fauna on the island, as well as its paths along irrigation channels. You will enjoy valleys and green paths, as well as the exquisite smells of hydrangeas that you will find along your path.

Your adventure starts in Machico and ends in Funchal. You’ll know the San Lourenco Peninsula, as well as all the interior and part of the coast of this charming island in the middle of the Atlantic and very close to the Canary Islands (Spain).

    Arrival in Funchal

    Today you will arrive in Funchal and, from there, we will transfer you to Machico, on the coastal part of the island of Madeira. This historic town features charming fortresses and stunning beaches that will allow you to get your hiking trail off to a great start.

    Overnight: Machico


    Hiking in the São Lourenço Peninsula

    For today's route, you must take a bus to Caniçal yourself, from where you will walk to the São Lourenço Peninsula, your destination for this first stage. There, you will discover the contrast of this area, in the northeast of Madeira, with the rest of the island.

    Throughout your day, you'll see the Islas Desiertas, as well as beautiful seascapes and multiple species of migratory birds that will cross your path. At the end of your route, take a bus back to Machico yourself.

    From Levada do Caniçal to Porto da Cruz

    Today you will have to take a bus on your own to Levada do Caniçal or, if you prefer, walk to your starting point, from where the views will make the start of your journey worthwhile.

    From the outskirts of Machico, you take the channel at the point where the inauguration plaque of the restoration works is located, next to the Caniçal Tunnel. From there, a gentle ascent allows you to cross the Ribeira Seca Valley until you reach the coastal path, always keeping to the right, on the other side of the mountain, Caniçal.

    Then you ascend Vereda da Boca do Risco that will take you to the viewpoint from where you will be able to overlook the entire north coast of the island. There you must turn left towards Porto da Cruz, following the path above the characteristic cliffs of the north coast of Madeira until you reach Porto da Cruz, your destination for today.

    There, we suggest you taste the famous red wine of the area. When you're done, you'll have a transfer included that will take you to Santana.

    Hiking to Levada do Caldeirao Verde

    For your walk today, you have a transfer included, just after breakfast, which takes you to Parque das Queimadas car park, where you will be hooked by Madeira’s green paradise and take you all over the interior of the island.

    After starting your trail, you will cross a wooden bridge and turn right. Along the way you'll find narrow passes, as well as some tunnels you'll have to cross in order to continue towards your destination for today.

    You will reach Caldeirao Verde, where you will find a waterfall that you can enjoy and, of course, you can take some photos from there.

    Once you have enjoyed the scenery, return to the starting point following the same path.

    You will have another included transfer that will take you back to your accommodation in Santana.

    From Paul da Serra to Encumeada

    Today you will have an included transfer to Bica da Cana to enter the Paul da Serra plateau, in the heart of the island of Madeira. Along your walk along the Levada do Norte, the views of the San Vicente Valley and the extensive farmlands will make you fall in love with the place.

    On today's route, there will be some tunnels that will take you to Encumeada, so we suggest you bring a torch or a similar item to be able to cross them without mishaps.

    Hiking to Faja Escura

    Today, you ascend for a few metres at the beginning of your day, from where you will begin your hike for this sixth day. You'll cross below Pico Grande later on.

    Afterwards, you'll start to descend steeply via a rolling path that will take you to the hamlet of Faja Escura, your destination for today. Here, you will have a transfer included to your accommodation in Funchal.

    From Centro Cívico do Estreito to Cabo Girão and Câmara do Lobos

    On this last day of walking, you will have a transfer included that will take you to the starting point next to the Centro Cívico do Estreito. From there, you'll start walking through the Levada do Norte while on your way, and encounter eucalyptus and pine trees that will make your trail much more enjoyable.

    Today, you will also pass through a small tunnel before reaching Cabo Girao, where the cliffs will surprise you. Then, you’ll continue to Câmara do Lobos, the fishing village that will be your destination today.

    Once there, enjoy a stroll through the harbour and a refreshing drink to recover from the day. Take a bus back to your accommodation in Funchal.

    Return from Funchal

    Today you will have a transfer included from Funchal to Funchal Airport, from where you can take your flight back to your hometown*.

    *Remember that when you book your circuit you can ask us to book additional hotel nights for the days after the end of your circuit to extend your stay in one of the municipalities on the Madeira hiking trail.

    What is the best time of year to travel on this route?

    This route is available all year round thanks to the fact that every month it benefits from the tropical climate in the area. Although there is a risk of rain and being a little colder in winter season, it is feasible every month to complete it.

    How do I get to the starting point?

    To get to the starting point of your walking holiday in Madeira, we suggest you take a flight to Funchal Airport. From there, you will have a transfer included to take you to your first accommodation.

    When you finish the route, you will have an included transfer that will take you back to Funchal Airport so that you can take your flight back to your home city.

    Can I travel alone?

    It is not possible to travel alone on this route due to the terrain found in the area. However, if you want to sleep in a single room, we can arrange it for you.

    Single rooms have a surcharge on their price and are subject to availability.

    When can I start my trail?

    You can start your hiking trail any day of the year according to the specifications of your itinerary.

    Does this route have an accompanying guide?

    All our hiking trails are completed in self-guided mode. Thus, each traveller has the opportunity to advance on their own and at their own pace for each of the routes marked during the full route itinerary.

    What does the full route itinerary contain?

    The route's complete itinerary is a guide we prepare for you with information on the maps, routes and sights of each hiking route.

    You will receive it by email one month before starting the trip along with all the documentation of the trip: accommodation reservations, luggage transfers, among others.

    The kilometres of travel and the journey times indicated for our hiking trips are reference values.

    It will depend on each walker the fulfilment of these times and distances, according to the speed at which they advance.


    What should I consider to prepare physically?

    Both sedentary people and those who regularly exercise should physically prepare for any of our hiking trails.

    Sedentary people can start with moderate activity and continue progressively. They should start by taking small 20-minute walks, two or three times a week. It is suggested to increase the time until you reach walk about 4 or 5 kilometres every hour.

    People with regular physical activity can start by walking from 45 to 60 minutes a day and increase the amount of time and kilometres they travel in the same span of time.

    Generally, it is recommended to start training about three months before starting the route.

    How far in advance should I make the reservation?

    There is no minimum number of days in advance to book, although on certain dates the occupancy of the accommodation is higher, especially in high season.

    Therefore, in order to guarantee availability in the best accommodation, we suggest you book as much in advance as possible, so that we can meet all your needs.

    What clothes and hiking equipment are indispensable?

    For any of our routes we suggest you to bring the following items: light and fast drying clothing, waterproof jacket and trousers, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a pair of shoes suitable for hiking, trekking poles, a pair of shoes to rest in, a jacket that doesn't take up much space and a bottle to carry water.

    Depending on the time of year in which you make the route, these items may vary.

    Remember that with Santiago Ways, you have included a baggage transfer service between stages, so we will take your backpack from one accommodation to another so that you only worry about walking (maximum 1 piece of 20 kg per person).

    For this reason, we suggest you prepare a second backpack, much smaller, that you can carry with you every day with water, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, documents, some food and cash.

    How does the baggage transfer work between stages?

    Every day, at 8:00 am, you must bring your luggage, properly labelled, to the reception. One of our carriers will pick it up and take it to the place where you are going to stay on your next stage.

    Delivery time varies according to the distance between stages and the carrier's delivery route. Usually, delivery is made before 4 p.m.

    Please note that on many routes you sleep more than one night in the same accommodation, so the baggage transfer will not be necessary in these cases.

    Should I take out travel insurance?

    To make any of our hiking trails it is advisable to have travel insurance with all the necessary coverage, especially emergency evacuation and medical care.

    Do all rooms have a private bathroom?

    Yes, all rooms you book for hiking trails with Santiago Ways have a private bathroom.

    Can I sleep alone in a room?

    Yes. We offer accommodation in single rooms and double rooms, according to the requirements of each traveller.

    Single rooms have a special surcharge and are subject to availability.

    When do you tell me which hotels I'm going to sleep in?

    We work with multiple accommodations in all locations which allows us to guarantee the best quality rooms for our travellers, provided that they are booked well in advance.

    The name and exact location of each hotel is sent about one month before the start of the trip.

    Am I going to share a room with strangers?

    No. All the accommodations we book for our travellers have private rooms with private bathrooms in order to guarantee all the comfort and comfort they need to rest properly.

    Is the accommodation close to the route I need to follow?

    All the accommodation we book is located in the centre of the villages. In any case, depending on availability, if any accommodation is quite far from the centre, they are all accessible on foot.

    When necessary, Santiago Ways will offer a transfer to the traveller so that they can reach their accommodation in the most comfortable way possible.

    What kind of accommodation do you book?
