Hiking trail in The Rota Vicentina: central route
Arrival in Odeceixe
Today you will arrive at Faro Airport and, from there, you will have a transfer included that will take you to Odeceixe, where you will start your walk tomorrow. We encourage you to visit its windmill and walk through the town's streets to fall in love with Portuguese culture from the very beginning.
Hiking from Aljezur across Odeceixe Beach
On your route today you will walk along the old fishermen's trails until you reach Odeceixe Beach. Along the way, don't forget to see the herons that will pass by as you advance along the mouth of the River Seixe.
Next, the pine and eucalyptus trees will be the main event on the trail before arriving in Aljezur, where you can get to know the famous Aljezur Castle, of polygonal floor plan and Arab origin, whose construction dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. You should know it, it’s a must-visit on this stage of your hike.
From Aljezur to Arrifana
If yesterday you did not reach it, and today you decide to climb up to Aljezur Castle, you’ll delight in the flora and fauna that you can observe from above. Afterwards, your route today will follow through the Amoreira Valley, where you will then arrive at Ponta da Atalaia, whose cliffs will surprise you.
As a curious fact, we would tell you that its name comes from the ancient Roman watchtower whose remains can still be seen at the end of this cape located on the shores of the Atlantic.
And if you've ever eaten gooseneck barnacles or heard of them, this will be an opportunity to see how fishermen work to get them. In the sands of Arrifana Bay, you will enjoy as never before, an ideal landscape to rest from your second day of hiking.
From Arrifana to Carrapateira
Today, you'll encounter diverse enchanting landscapes and panoramas. Having the mountain on one side and the ocean on the other while doing a hiking trail is not a pleasure that many can talk about.
The cliffs and, the subsequent peaceful forests, will take you to Bordeira. This typical Portuguese village, with its deep-rooted peasant traditions, will make you feel that you are in an ideal environment to disconnect for a few hours.
When you continue to your destination today, Carrapateira, you will meet up again with the coast. The views you will have will make all the effort of this day worthwhile.
Circular route from Carrapateira
A walk along the coast around Ponta da Carrapateira awaits you on this route. You will be able to see the Iberian Peninsula from multiple angles, as well as heavenly beaches that will make you want to reach them.
You can also see fishermen on the cliffs that you will pass along. At the end of your route, you will return to Carrapateira, where you will again spend the night.
Hiking to Vila do Bispo
Today you will have a transfer included to Pedralva, just after breakfast, so that from this beautiful and colourful village, you will start today's route. You'll walk through orchards and traditional peaceful forests in the area and if you're lucky and travel in springtime, the wild flowers you'll see as you pass will delight you.
You will then continue to Praia da Barrica, in the Costa Vicentina National Park, and then enter a forest that will allow you to view the sea just before you arrive at Vila do Bispo, your destination today.
From Vila do Bispo to Cabo San Vicente
For your last day of hiking, you will have a spectacular route that will take you to the southernmost and most westerly point of all Europe: Cabo San Vicente. When you arrive, be sure to take some pictures and enjoy the views of the waves breaking just below the lighthouse.
You should also keep an eye out for the many species of birds that migrate there, especially if you are lucky enough to travel in autumn. Once you have enjoyed the atmosphere of the lighthouse and the history behind it, you will have a transfer included from Cabo San Vicente to Sagres for your last night on the central route of the Rota Vicentina hiking trail.
Return from Sagres
Today you will have to return on your own from Sagres to Faro Airport, from where you will take your flight back to your home city.*
