Arrival in Gerona or Figueras

Arrival at Gerona Airport or Figueras train station. From either of these points you have a transfer included which will take you to your accommodation in San Pedro Pescador.

Circular route in San Pedro Pescador

On your route today, you will enjoy a hike from La Escala, to where they take you from San Pedro Pescador by taxi. Afterwards, you will go along a very easy-to-navigate coastline with spectacular views of the Pyrenees.

Then you will reach the Greek and Roman ruins in Ampurias, where you will be impressed by the ancient mosaics that you will find there. Finally, you will return along some country roads passing through the hamlet of 'Cinc Claus', to finally get back to San Pedro Pescador, where you will also spend the second night on your route.

From La Reserva Natural de Aiguamolls to Castellón De Ampurias

On the third day of your route, you will enjoy the River Fluviá and the Aiguamolls Nature Reserve in all its splendour, which extends over 2000 hectares. You can also discover multiple key points from which you can spot herons, ducks, among many other autochthonous animals that will make your experience even better.

The municipality of Castellón de Ampurias, where you will spend your third night, is a medieval town that, thanks to its historic buildings and medieval streets, will allow you to enjoy a lovely night of rest and relaxation after a day of walking.

From Playa Canyelles to Cadaqués

Today you will arrive at the village that is, surely, the most beautiful and popular in the whole province of Catalonia. They will transport you to Canyelles Beach so that from there you start your path through the cliffs of the Catalan coast.

You will see by your side beaches with crystal-clear waters in which you will want to bathe thanks to the beauty of the landscapes and to the tranquillity of the cliffs that accompany you. On your route you will see flowers, pines and citrus trees that you can enjoy while walking in the middle of the forest.

Then you will go back to the coast and then find old farmers trails whose beauty will surprise you. Once you have reached the peak of the ascent to which you are heading, you will begin to descend towards Cadaqués, a beautiful, small fishing village where you will spend the night after your fourth day of trekking.

Rest day or optional trek to the Parque Natural del Cabo de Creus

Today you will go to the Cabo de Creus National Park, where you will enjoy the spectacular lighthouse in the south of the peninsula.

Of course, from Cadaqués you will go with some nostalgia, choosing the hiking option if you have not been able to go through its beautiful streets, but do not worry because today you will stay overnight there again.

If you stay in Cadaqués you can visit its 17th-century church and also get to know the museum located in Salvador Dalí’s old house, which is a must visit in this town.

When you are in the National Park of Cabo de Creus, you know that you cannot miss the lighthouse and the views you will have of the Costa Brava from there.

Hiking in Puerto de Selva

Today you'll walk along beautiful routes in the Catalan countryside with stunning views across the centre of the Cabo de Creus Natural Park. You will cross a landscape of varied species and then arrive at your destination for today: The village of El Puerto de Selva. Once there, you will love its landscapes, its beaches and all the part of the mountain range that you will see from Puerto de Selva.

Then, in San Pedro de Roda do not miss its spectacular monastery. Later, if you are more of a beach person, because beaches are something that Catalonia has a very good reputation for, there in Puerto de Selva you will find some of the best for rest and enjoyment.

Hiking in the mountains of Palau Sabardera

Once you leave Puerto de Selva, you will climb behind this small town along its mountains. You will pass, first of all, by the San Pedro de Roda Monastery. Then you will continue to the ruins of the Castle of San Salvador.

Then, the Pyrenees and the Sierra de la Albera will be on your way with a view that will leave you fascinated and compensate for all the steep paths you have travelled across so far.

Then, crossing the mountain, you will reach Palau Sabardera, a small town in the province of Gerona, at the end of the hills. Once there, you can rest from your seventh day of walking, where you have already managed to finish all of your trekking routes successfully and surely you want a good drink in a local bar to also enjoy the culture of the province.

What is the best time of year to travel on this route?

This route is available between mid-January and June, inclusive; also from September to mid-December inclusive.

The Mediterranean climate will give you the best sunny days, even if you go in winter, so you can travel comfortably on your walking holiday in Catalonia.

How do I get to the starting point?

To get to the starting point of your walking holiday in Catalonia, we suggest that you arrive at Girona Airport, from where you will have a transfer included at the beginning and another at the end of your stay.

There is also the option to fly to Barcelona Airport and, from there, take the train or bus to the city and then head to Figueres. Once there, you will have an included transfer to your hotel.

When you finish your route in Girona, you can go by bus or taxi to Girona Airport or take a train to Barcelona Airport.

Remember, we can arrange a private transfer both at the beginning and end of your route, in case you fly to Barcelona Airport. Ask us about this option at the time of booking with us.

Can I travel alone?

It is not possible to travel alone on this route due to the terrain found in the area. However, if you want to sleep in a single room, we can arrange it for you.

Single rooms have a surcharge on their price and are subject to availability.

When can I start my trail?

You can start your hiking trail any day of the year according to the specifications of your itinerary.

Does this route have an accompanying guide?

All our hiking trails are completed in self-guided mode. Thus, each traveller has the opportunity to advance on their own and at their own pace for each of the routes marked during the full route itinerary.

What does the full route itinerary contain?

The route's complete itinerary is a guide we prepare for you with information on the maps, routes and sights of each hiking route.

You will receive it by email one month before starting the trip along with all the documentation of the trip: accommodation reservations, luggage transfers, among others.

The kilometres of travel and the journey times indicated for our hiking trips are reference values.

It will depend on each walker the fulfilment of these times and distances, according to the speed at which they advance.


Advice

What should I consider to prepare physically?

Both sedentary people and those who regularly exercise should physically prepare for any of our hiking trails.

Sedentary people can start with moderate activity and continue progressively. They should start by taking small 20-minute walks, two or three times a week. It is suggested to increase the time until you reach walk about 4 or 5 kilometres every hour.

People with regular physical activity can start by walking from 45 to 60 minutes a day and increase the amount of time and kilometres they travel in the same span of time.

Generally, it is recommended to start training about three months before starting the route.

How far in advance should I make the reservation?

There is no minimum number of days in advance to book, although on certain dates the occupancy of the accommodation is higher, especially in high season.

Therefore, in order to guarantee availability in the best accommodation, we suggest you book as much in advance as possible, so that we can meet all your needs.

What clothes and hiking equipment are indispensable?

For any of our routes we suggest you to bring the following items: light and fast drying clothing, waterproof jacket and trousers, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a pair of shoes suitable for hiking, trekking poles, a pair of shoes to rest in, a jacket that doesn't take up much space and a bottle to carry water.

Depending on the time of year in which you make the route, these items may vary.

Remember that with Santiago Ways, you have included a baggage transfer service between stages, so we will take your backpack from one accommodation to another so that you only worry about walking (maximum 1 piece of 20 kg per person).

For this reason, we suggest you prepare a second backpack, much smaller, that you can carry with you every day with water, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, documents, some food and cash.

How does the baggage transfer work between stages?

Every day, at 8:00 am, you must bring your luggage, properly labelled, to the reception. One of our carriers will pick it up and take it to the place where you are going to stay on your next stage.

Delivery time varies according to the distance between stages and the carrier's delivery route. Usually, delivery is made before 4 p.m.

Please note that on many routes you sleep more than one night in the same accommodation, so the baggage transfer will not be necessary in these cases.

Should I take out travel insurance?

To make any of our hiking trails it is advisable to have travel insurance with all the necessary coverage, especially emergency evacuation and medical care.

Do all rooms have a private bathroom?

Yes, all rooms you book for hiking trails with Santiago Ways have a private bathroom.

Can I sleep alone in a room?

Yes. We offer accommodation in single rooms and double rooms, according to the requirements of each traveller.

Single rooms have a special surcharge and are subject to availability.

When do you tell me which hotels I'm going to sleep in?

We work with multiple accommodations in all locations which allows us to guarantee the best quality rooms for our travellers, provided that they are booked well in advance.

The name and exact location of each hotel is sent about one month before the start of the trip.

Am I going to share a room with strangers?

No. All the accommodations we book for our travellers have private rooms with private bathrooms in order to guarantee all the comfort and comfort they need to rest properly.

Is the accommodation close to the route I need to follow?

All the accommodation we book is located in the centre of the villages. In any case, depending on availability, if any accommodation is quite far from the centre, they are all accessible on foot.

When necessary, Santiago Ways will offer a transfer to the traveller so that they can reach their accommodation in the most comfortable way possible.

What kind of accommodation do you book?

All the accommodation we book in Santiago Ways offer the necessary comfort to rest after long days of walking. We have partnerships with hotels, country houses, mountain retreats and charming farm stays, always with a room and a private bathroom.
